Lithuanian midwifery students explore education and practice in Finland through Rosa Linea

October 22, 2026

‍An inspiring international exchange brought midwifery students and educators from Lithuania to Helsinki, Finland, where they explored different approaches to midwifery education, shared experiences and strengthened professional connections through the Nordplus Rosa Linea project.

During their visit to Arcada University of Applied Sciences, the Lithuanian students had the opportunity to explore teaching facilities, participate in simulation-based learning and exchange experiences with Finnish midwifery students and educators. Discussions focused on similarities and differences in midwifery education and clinical practice between Lithuania and Finland.

The students also presented their bachelor's thesis topics, providing opportunities for academic discussions and the exchange of ideas. A visit to the maternity ward at Naistenklinikka Hospital offered valuable insights into the Finnish maternity care system and the everyday work of midwives.

Learning together across borders

The students particularly appreciated the practical approach to midwifery education at Arcada, including simulation training and opportunities for reflection and feedback.

One student highlighted the supportive learning environment:

"The idea that practical simulations are not graded is a huge plus, not as nerve-wracking that making a mistake costs you your grade."

Gabija Kazlauskaitė, midwifery student, Lithuania

Another student reflected on the maternity care environment at Naistenklinikka Hospital:

"The environment felt calm and welcoming, almost like being at home. I think this is very important because women should feel safe, relaxed, and comfortable during childbirth."

Evelina Navickaitė, midwifery student, Lithuania

For many of the students, the exchange was much more than an academic visit. It strengthened their motivation to become midwives and encouraged them to approach their future profession with curiosity, confidence and openness to new ideas.

As Eglė Gurčinė reflected:

"This was so much more than a study trip. It was an opportunity to learn, connect, reflect, and feel even more inspired about midwifery."

Strengthening international midwifery collaboration

For the accompanying lecturer and practising midwife, Miglė Marozienė, the visit also provided an important opportunity for professional reflection and international networking.

She emphasised the value of bringing international perspectives into midwifery education, learning from colleagues abroad and sharing Lithuania's achievements in developing midwifery education.

"I truly believe that international collaboration is one of the most powerful ways to nurture our profession, learn from one another, and build a stronger, more united global midwifery community."

The visit demonstrated how international exchanges can enrich education, encourage professional development and create lasting connections between students, educators and practising midwives.

Through the Nordplus Rosa Linea project, these opportunities help strengthen a shared commitment to high-quality midwifery education and maternity care across national borders.

A heartfelt thank you to Arcada University of Applied Sciences for the warm welcome, and to everyone who contributed to making this exchange such a meaningful experience.
